Bring to a boil over high heat and cook 5-10 minutes until the beans are heated through and very soft. Drain very well and return to pan. Saute the garlic in the butter in a small skillet over low heat until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in 1/4 cup milk to warm it. Add the milk mixture to the cooked beans., With a hand-held electric beater, whip the beans until thoroughly pureed but not smooth, adding more milk if necessary. Stir in the salt and pepper.
